The Maersk & Carbmee partnership aims to support customers in responding to CBAM and broader decarbonization goals by delivering a streamlined, scalable end-to-end solution.
Partnership Introduction
Maersk, a global leader in integrated logistics and container shipping operating in over 130 countries and serving more than 100,000 customers worldwide, offers end-to-end logistics solutions from factory to end consumers that are both efficient and contribute to more sustainable logistics practices.
To support this, Maersk has entered a strategic partnership with Carbmee, combining its deep supply chain and regulatory expertise with Carbmee’s AI-powered platform to deliver a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for CBAM compliance and emissions management.
“Our partnership with Carbmee will be instrumental in enabling our customers to respond confidently to CBAM requirements. By combining Maersk’s supply chain and trade compliance expertise with Carbmee’s powerful emissions intelligence platform, we’re not only helping businesses stay compliant, but also laying the groundwork for more emission transparency and hence opportunities for long-term decarbonization. This strategic collaboration is a key part of how we support our customers in building more resilient and sustainable supply chains."
Enabling Scalable CBAM Compliance and Decarbonization Through Strategic Partnership
The partnership aims at supporting customers in responding to CBAM and broader decarbonization goals by delivering a streamlined, scalable end-to-end solution.
- Ensure CBAM compliance with confidence through customs data management, automated emissions data collection, calculation, and reporting.
- Reduce regulatory complexity by leveraging Maersk’s trade compliance expertise and Carbmee’s purpose-built software.
- Gain full transparency on carbon costs, enabling data-drive planning and business risk mitigation.
- Accelerate decarbonization with visibility and insights that support long-term strategy development and emissions reduction.
- Strengthen supply chain resilience through proactive management of carbon regulations.
A complex Challenge
- With the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) coming into effect, Maersk’s global customers face mounting pressure to report embedded emissions associated with goods imported into the EU.
- CBAM requires affected importers to disclose emissions data on imported goods and purchase certificates to account for the carbon footprint of the goods—creating both operational complexity and financial exposure.
- For Maersk’s customers, the challenge lies in managing CBAM requirements across diverse and often opaque supply chains, involving large numbers of suppliers and limited data availability.
- Non-compliance could lead to penalties of €10 to €50 per ton of unreported carbon and rising costs from CBAM certificates pegged to the EU ETS carbon market means customers will soon face millions in embedded Carbon Costs. Example to illustrate rising costs below. This makes CBAM not just a regulatory hurdle, but a material business risk.
- To help customers navigate this complexity, Maersk needed a scalable solution to automate emissions calculations, enable supplier data collection, and support strategic decisions around decarbonization and cost management.
- Partnering with Carbmee, and leveraging their own customs data capabilities, Maersk is now empowering its customers to move beyond compliance and toward long-term carbon management
“Navigating the complex CBAM regulation is a major challenge for many of our global customers. Ensuring compliance requires deep regulatory insight, trade data management, and a scalable digital solution for emissions calculations.
The Solution: Simplifying CBAM Compliance with Expertise & AI
To help its customers navigate the complexity of CBAM compliance, Maersk partnered with Carbmee to deliver an integrated solution combining deep logistics and trade compliance expertise with powerful, AI-driven software:
1) Streamlined Emissions Data Management:
Carbmee’s Environmental Intelligence System (EIS™) enables Maersk’s customers to automate emissions calculations for CBAM-relevant goods.
The platform integrates data from thousands of transactions and product categories, leveraging a proprietary database with CN codes, country-specific emission factors, and supplier-level information to ensure high data accuracy and traceability.
2) Consultation & Regulatory Guidance:
Maersk provides tailored consultation to its global customers, guiding them through the implications of CBAM, helping them build internal capabilities to respond, and supporting them to set-up their trade data to ensure compliance
Leveraging its deep understanding of supply chain operations, Maersk ensures that customers are equipped to manage regulatory requirements across complex trade flows.
3) Supplier Engagement at Scale:
Carbmee EIS™ enables Maersk to support its customers in engaging directly with suppliers to collect primary emissions data across global supply chains.
This approach increases the quality of emissions reporting and significantly reduces complexity and workload for these customers.
4) CBAM Reporting & Risk Mitigation:
Together, Maersk and Carbmee ensure that importers are able to generate, review, and submit CBAM-compliant reports with confidence.
The combined solution minimizes the risk of non-compliance, reduces financial exposure, and empowers importers to transition from reactive reporting to proactive carbon management.
